November 2016
Technology is always in flux. New gadgets, new solutions, new services – technology evolution never sleeps. So many new ideas are out every day waiting to be surfaced. Is the next big thing already out there?
Under “Ruminations” we are kicking off a new sporadic series of thoughts and information discussing what we find impressive, what amazed us, or just left us behind puzzled for various reasons.
In this edition we are looking behind the scenes of the wearable market.
Smart, simple & stylish – are Wearables here to stay?

No doubt, wearables are “The Next Big Thing”, and the market size predictions have assumed vast proportions. Following the International Data Corporation (IDC) the worldwide shipments of wearable devices are expected to reach 101.9 million units by the end of 2016, representing 29% growth over 2015. According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker, the market for wearable devices will see a compound annual growth rate of 20.3%, culminating in 213.6 million units shipped in 2020.

Although smartwatches and fitness gadgets will continue to be a main market driver, other form factors may become more popular over time. With the advent and availability of more cellular connectivity/bandwidth and applications, wearables rapidly will conquer new areas, such as the working environment, healthcare, retail and entertainment. Crucial, however, seems to be the increased availability of more applications coming to market. A plus of utility and value surely should be one of the main triggers for users as this is what they want to see.

Apart from watches, bands and similar devices, other categories, like eyewear, smart clothing, or smart jewelry, might be sectors to watch. Integrated fashion technologies sounds like a promising approach as both, tech companies and the clothing industry, have identified this as an area of interest and cooperation.

Smart Jewelry – new shining multi-talents?

For good reasons also the so-called smart jewelry market definitely is worth to look at. This rather new trend has already seen some well known companies, like Fossil and Swarovski, entering the stage with glamorous designer gadgets. And with many other new players, amongst them some very interesting start-ups knocking at the door, the smart jewelry form factor may not see a huge amount on market increase immediately. However, we are sure, with the right creative offerings – think of biometric or security applications, it should have a valid chance to become much more than a niche market. We surely will further monitor the market opportunities and share what we have learned with you in one of our future ruminations editions.
